Lab software vs Excel

Many small labs run on Excel, a Word report template and a paper register. Here is what changes with lab software.

Where Excel is ahead

Excel costs nothing extra, every computer already has it, and your staff know it. For a lab doing a handful of tests a day, a careful Excel sheet can be enough.

Which to pick

Stay on Excel if you see a few patients a day, one person does everything, and nobody asks for reports on WhatsApp.

Move to lab software when reports are retyped, totals do not match at day close, a sample goes missing, or patients wait for reports to be sent by hand.

Questions labs ask

Is lab software worth it over Excel for a small lab?
If you print more than about 15 reports a day, usually yes. The time saved retyping reports and tallying dues at day close is the main saving, and patients get reports on WhatsApp without someone sending each one.
Can I bring my Excel patient list across?
Yes. Your test list and prices are set up when you start, and an Excel or CSV list of past patients can be imported. You do not have to move old reports to start using the software for new patients.
Will my staff manage it?
The screens are made for front-desk staff and technicians, not computer experts: register, print a barcode, type values, approve, send. Most labs print their first real report on day one.
