Overview
Nutraceuticals | Suspension
Uses & Benefits
Alkalinisation of urine to relieve burning urination and discomfort in urinary tract infections (UTIs); may be used as an adjuvant to help prevent/assist management of uric acid/cystine kidney stones when prescribed.
How It Works
Urinary alkalinisers raise urine pH by providing alkalising salts, making urine less acidic. This reduces irritation of the urinary tract and can increase solubility of certain crystals (e.g., uric acid), helping reduce burning and discomfort.
Directions for Use
Oral suspension. Shake well before use. Measure with a dosing cup/spoon and take as directed by the physician, usually diluted with water and taken after meals with plenty of fluids. Do not exceed the prescribed dose; complete the advised course for UTI symptom relief.
Side Effects
Nausea, vomiting, stomach upset, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, belching, flatulence
Warnings & Precautions
Use with caution in kidney disease, heart failure, hypertension, oedema, or if on a sodium/potassium-restricted diet (exact salt content unknown). Risk of electrolyte imbalance and metabolic alkalosis if overused. Seek medical advice if symptoms persist, fever/flank pain occurs, blood in urine, or recurrent UTIs. Not a substitute for antibiotics when infection is present.
Drug Interactions
May alter urinary excretion of some medicines; use caution with lithium. If potassium-containing, avoid with ACE inhibitors/ARBs, potassium-sparing diuretics (e.g., spironolactone), and other potassium supplements due to hyperkalaemia risk. Separate from tetracyclines/fluoroquinolones and iron by 2-4 hours if mineral salts are present.
