Overview
Drug | Inhale
Uses & Benefits
Maintenance treatment of asthma in children where combination therapy (inhaled corticosteroid + long-acting bronchodilator) is indicated; helps prevent wheeze, breathlessness and asthma exacerbations. Not for acute relief of bronchospasm.
How It Works
Fluticasone is an inhaled corticosteroid that reduces airway inflammation, swelling and mucus production. Salmeterol is a long-acting beta2-agonist that relaxes airway smooth muscle for prolonged bronchodilation. Together they improve symptom control and reduce asthma attacks when used regularly.
Directions for Use
Inhalation use only via metered dose inhaler (MDI). Use exactly as prescribed, typically as a regular maintenance inhaler (often 2 puffs twice daily in children as advised). Shake well before each use, exhale fully, actuate while inhaling slowly and deeply, hold breath ~10 seconds. Use a spacer/mask in children if advised. Rinse mouth/gargle with water after each use to reduce oral thrush. Do not use for sudden asthma attack—keep a reliever (e.g., salbutamol) available.
Schedule H: use on prescription only. Not for acute asthma symptoms/status asthmaticus. Do not stop abruptly; taper only on medical advice. Use with caution in heart disease, arrhythmias, hypertension, hyperthyroidism, diabetes, seizure disorders, and in patients with low potassium. Inhaled corticosteroids may increase risk of oral fungal infection; rinse mouth after use. Long-term/high-dose use may affect growth in children—monitor height; use lowest effective dose. Seek urgent care if breathing worsens immediately after use (paradoxical bronchospasm).
