Composition of Zuvirab Injection

Zuvirab Injection contains Rabies vaccine (inactivated) (Purified Vero Cell Rabies Vaccine, PVRV) 2.5 IU per 0.5 mL vial (with diluent). It belongs to the Inactivated viral vaccine (rabies vaccine, cell culture derived) class of medicines.

Uses of Zuvirab Injection

Prevention of rabies (immunization) for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in high-risk individuals and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) after suspected/confirmed exposure to rabies.

How Zuvirab Injection works

This inactivated rabies vaccine stimulates the immune system to produce rabies virus neutralizing antibodies. These antibodies help prevent the rabies virus from establishing infection after exposure and provide protection in high-risk individuals.

How to take Zuvirab Injection

For intramuscular use only; administer as per national/doctor-recommended schedule for PrEP or PEP. Common IM site: deltoid in adults/children (anterolateral thigh in small children); do not inject into gluteal region. Reconstitute with supplied diluent and use immediately after reconstitution; complete the full course. In PEP, rabies immunoglobulin may also be required for category III exposures as advised by a clinician.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

Take the missed dose of Zuvirab as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and carry on with the usual schedule. Do not take two doses together to make up for a missed dose.

If you take too much

Taking more Zuvirab than prescribed can be harmful. If you suspect an overdose, contact a doctor or go to the nearest emergency department at once, and carry the pack or strip with you. In India the emergency number is 112.

Side effects of Zuvirab Injection

Most side effects of Zuvirab are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

• Injection site pain
• redness
• swelling
• fever
• headache
• dizziness
• nausea
• vomiting
• abdominal pain
• fatigue
• muscle aches
• joint pain
• rash

Stop the medicine and seek help immediately for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.

Safety advice for Zuvirab Injection

Warnings and precautions

Do not use in persons with known hypersensitivity to any component of the vaccine; seek medical help for severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis). In PEP, vaccination should not be delayed; for PrEP, defer vaccination during acute severe febrile illness if possible. Use with caution in immunocompromised patients (may need antibody titre testing/extra doses). Keep emergency treatment for anaphylaxis available. Follow local guidelines for wound washing and vaccination schedule for exposures.

Interactions with other medicines

Immunosuppressants (e.g., high-dose corticosteroids, chemotherapy, biologics) may reduce vaccine response; avoid administering immunoglobulin in the same syringe or at the same site as vaccine; other vaccines may be given at separate sites as per clinician advice.

How to store Zuvirab Injection

Store refrigerated at 2°C to 8°C; do not freeze. Protect from light. After reconstitution, use immediately and discard any unused portion.
