Overview
Drug | Tablet
Uses & Benefits
Treatment of epilepsy (partial seizures, generalized tonic-clonic seizures) and trigeminal neuralgia (facial nerve pain). Also used in some cases for neuropathic pain as advised by a doctor.
How It Works
Carbamazepine is an antiepileptic that stabilizes overactive nerve membranes by blocking voltage-gated sodium channels. This reduces abnormal electrical activity in the brain (seizures) and decreases pain signal transmission in trigeminal neuralgia.
Directions for Use
Take the tablet exactly as prescribed, preferably with food to reduce stomach upset. Swallow whole with water; do not stop suddenly as it may worsen seizures. Dose is individualized and often started low then increased; take at the same time each day.
May cause drowsiness/dizziness—avoid driving or operating machinery until you know the effect. Do not stop abruptly. Risk of serious skin reactions (SJS/TEN), especially in certain genetic backgrounds (HLA-B*1502/HLA-A*3101); seek urgent care for rash, mouth sores, fever. Can cause low sodium (hyponatremia), blood disorders (low WBC/platelets), liver problems—monitor blood counts and liver function as advised. Use caution in glaucoma, heart conduction problems, liver disease, kidney disease, and in the elderly. May reduce effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives; use additional contraception.
