How to choose
Match the oil to the actual problem. Breakage (short broken hairs, split ends, hair that snaps while combing): coconut-oil-based products have the best evidence — the oil penetrates the shaft and cuts protein loss during washing. Ayurvedic bhringraj formulations (Indulekha and similar) are coconut- or sesame-based with herb infusions; users like the scalp-massage ritual, and massage itself improves local circulation. Dryness and frizz: any light oil used as a pre-wash mask for 30-60 minutes works; overnight oiling adds little except pillow stains and, on acne-prone foreheads, breakouts. Genuine thinning at the crown or a widening parting is usually androgenetic (pattern) hair loss — that responds to clinically proven treatment a doctor can prescribe, not to any oil. Rule of thumb: oil for the shaft, treatment for the follicle. Also check the base: mineral-oil-heavy budget oils coat without penetrating; look for coconut, sesame, or argan high in the ingredient list.
Who really needs this
Anyone whose 'hair fall' is really breakage — the majority of complaints, especially with chemically treated, coloured, or heat-styled hair. Dry, frizzy hair that tangles. Scalp-massage lovers (the ritual has real relaxation value and does no harm on a healthy scalp). Skip or pause oiling if you have active dandruff or seborrhoeic dermatitis — oil feeds the Malassezia yeast; treat the scalp first (see our dandruff shampoo guide). And if you can see scalp through thinning hair, take photos monthly and consult a doctor early — pattern loss is far easier to hold than to regrow.
