Acenocoumarol is a vitamin K antagonist anticoagulant. It inhibits vitamin K–dependent clotting factors (II, VII, IX, X) in the liver, reducing the blood’s ability to form clots. Its effect is monitored using PT/INR.
Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually once daily at the same time each day. Dose is individualized based on INR; do not change dose or stop without medical advice. Can be taken with or without food; keep dietary vitamin K intake consistent and attend regular INR testing.

High risk of serious bleeding; seek urgent care for unusual bleeding, severe headache, weakness, vomiting blood, or black stools. Requires regular PT/INR monitoring. Use with caution in liver or kidney disease, uncontrolled hypertension, history of bleeding, peptic ulcer, recent surgery/trauma, alcohol misuse, and in elderly patients. Maintain consistent vitamin K intake; avoid sudden dietary changes. Inform healthcare providers before any procedure/dental work. Do not self-medicate with painkillers like NSAIDs without advice.
Other anticoagulants (heparin, DOACs), antiplatelets (aspirin, clopidogrel), NSAIDs (ibuprofen, diclofenac), many antibiotics (e.g., macrolides, fluoroquinolones, cotrimoxazole), antifungals (azole group), amiodarone, statins (some), antiepileptics (phenytoin, carbamazepine), thyroid hormones, SSRIs/SNRIs, corticosteroids, herbal products (St John’s wort, ginkgo, garlic) and vitamin K-containing supplements/foods
