Relief of anxiety and tension, symptomatic relief of itching (pruritus) due to allergic conditions such as urticaria and dermatitis, adjunct in allergic reactions
Hydroxyzine is a first-generation antihistamine (H1 blocker) with sedative and anxiolytic properties. It reduces the effects of histamine to relieve itching/allergy symptoms and also depresses activity in certain areas of the central nervous system to reduce anxiety and induce calmness.
Take as prescribed by the doctor. Swallow the tablet with water, with or without food. It may cause drowsiness; preferably take in the evening/at bedtime if advised and avoid driving or operating machinery. Do not stop or change the dose without medical advice.
Drowsiness, sleepiness, dizziness, dry mouth, fatigue, headache, constipation, blurred vision, nausea
May cause significant drowsiness and impaired alertness—avoid driving/operating machinery. Use with caution in elderly, glaucoma, enlarged prostate/urinary retention, constipation, asthma/COPD, liver or kidney impairment. Risk of QT prolongation/abnormal heart rhythm—use caution in patients with heart disease, electrolyte imbalance or those on QT-prolonging medicines. Seek urgent care for palpitations, fainting, severe dizziness, allergic swelling or breathing difficulty.
Alcohol and other CNS depressants (benzodiazepines, opioids, sleep medicines) increase sedation, other antihistamines increase side effects, anticholinergics increase dry mouth/constipation/urinary retention, QT-prolonging drugs (e.g., certain antiarrhythmics, antipsychotics, macrolide antibiotics, fluoroquinolones) increase arrhythmia risk, MAO inhibitors may enhance anticholinergic/CNS effects
