Dry (non-productive) cough, throat irritation-related cough, cough due to common cold or allergy (symptomatic relief)
Dextromethorphan is a centrally acting antitussive. It suppresses the cough reflex by acting on the cough center in the brain, reducing the urge to cough.
Take by mouth using a measuring cup/spoon. Usually taken every 6–8 hours as needed; follow the label/doctor’s advice. Can be taken with or without food. Do not exceed the recommended dose; not for prolonged use without medical advice.
Drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, stomach upset, constipation, dry mouth
Do not use in children below the age recommended on the label without medical advice. Avoid driving or operating machinery if drowsy. Do not use for cough with excessive mucus, chronic cough (asthma/COPD/smoking), or if fever/rash/persistent symptoms occur—seek medical advice. Risk of misuse/overdose; do not exceed dose. Use caution in liver disease. Seek urgent care for serotonin syndrome symptoms (agitation, confusion, sweating, fast heartbeat, tremor) especially if on serotonergic medicines.
MAO inhibitors (e.g., selegiline, linezolid) and within 14 days of stopping them, SSRIs/SNRIs/TCAs (risk of serotonin syndrome), other CNS depressants (alcohol, sedatives), serotonergic agents (tramadol, triptans), CYP2D6 inhibitors (e.g., fluoxetine, paroxetine, quinidine) may increase effects
