Monograph
Tablet
Treatment of susceptible bacterial infections such as ear infections (otitis media), throat/tonsil infections (pharyngitis/tonsillitis), sinusitis, bronchitis, pneumonia, skin and soft tissue infections, and urinary tract infections.
Cefaclor is a cephalosporin antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins. This weakens the cell wall and causes bacterial cell death, helping clear the infection.
Dispersible tablet: dissolve the tablet in a small amount of water and consume immediately, or as directed by the physician. May be taken with or without food (taking with food may reduce stomach upset). Complete the full prescribed course; do not skip doses.
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, indigestion, rash, itching, headache, dizziness, vaginal yeast infection
Use only for bacterial infections; misuse can cause resistance. Do not use if allergic to cefaclor/cephalosporins; use caution with penicillin allergy due to possible cross-reactivity. Use with caution in kidney disease; dose adjustment may be needed. Seek urgent care for severe allergy (swelling, breathing difficulty), severe skin reactions, or persistent/watery/bloody diarrhoea (risk of C. difficile colitis).
Warfarin/other anticoagulants (increased bleeding risk), probenecid (may increase cefaclor levels), live bacterial vaccines such as oral typhoid vaccine (reduced vaccine effect)
