Epilepsy/seizure disorders, Bipolar disorder (mania), Migraine prophylaxis (prevention)
Divalproex increases GABA activity and reduces abnormal neuronal excitability in the brain. This helps control seizures and manic episodes and can prevent migraines in some patients.
Take exactly as prescribed at the same time daily. Swallow ER tablet whole; do not crush/chew. May be taken with food to reduce stomach upset.
Nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, tremor, drowsiness, dizziness, weight gain, hair loss, increased liver enzymes
May cause serious liver damage and pancreatitis; monitor symptoms and periodic tests as advised. High teratogenic risk; avoid in pregnancy and use effective contraception. Caution in liver disease, bleeding disorders, and in children (higher hepatotoxicity risk).
Lamotrigine, carbamazepine, phenytoin, phenobarbital, topiramate, aspirin/warfarin and other anticoagulants, alcohol and CNS depressants
