Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) to help stop smoking; reduces nicotine withdrawal symptoms and cravings in tobacco dependence
How It Works
Nicotine polacrilex releases nicotine slowly when chewed. The nicotine is absorbed through the lining of the mouth, helping relieve cravings and withdrawal without the harmful chemicals from tobacco smoke.
Directions for Use
For oral use as chewing gum. Use the “chew and park” method: chew slowly until a tingling/peppery taste appears, then park between gum and cheek; repeat for ~30 minutes. Avoid eating or drinking (especially acidic drinks like coffee/cola/juice) 15 minutes before and during use. Typical: 1 gum when urge to smoke occurs; usually 8–12 gums/day initially; do not exceed 24 gums/day. Taper gradually over 8–12 weeks or as advised by doctor. 2 mg is generally for those who smoke <20 cigarettes/day; heavy smokers may require 4 mg or medical advice.
For tobacco dependence only. Do not chew like regular gum or swallow; risk of nausea and hiccups. Not recommended for non-smokers. Use with caution in heart disease (recent heart attack, unstable angina, serious arrhythmias), uncontrolled hypertension, hyperthyroidism, diabetes, pheochromocytoma; monitor as nicotine can increase heart rate/BP and alter insulin needs. Stop and seek medical help if chest pain, severe palpitations, or allergic reaction occurs. Keep out of reach of children; accidental ingestion can be dangerous. If dentures/TMJ disorder, chewing gum may be difficult—consider other NRT forms.

Other nicotine/tobacco products (risk of nicotine overdose); smoking cessation can increase levels/effects of CYP1A2 substrates (e.g., theophylline, clozapine, olanzapine, caffeine) and may require dose adjustment; caution with sympathomimetics
