Type 2 diabetes mellitus—used to improve blood sugar control along with diet and exercise; may be used alone or with other antidiabetic medicines (e.g., metformin, sulfonylureas, insulin) as prescribed.
What are the side effects?
Headache, nasopharyngitis (common cold), upper respiratory tract infection, nausea, diarrhoea, stomach discomfort, dizziness, hypoglycaemia (especially with sulfonylurea/insulin)
How does this medicine work?
Sitagliptin is a DPP-4 inhibitor. It increases levels of incretin hormones (GLP-1, GIP), which enhance glucose-dependent insulin release and reduce glucagon secretion, thereby lowering blood glucose with a low risk of hypoglycaemia when used alone.
How should I use this medicine?
Take by mouth as directed by your doctor, usually once daily, with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with water at the same time each day. Dose adjustment is required in kidney disease; do not stop or change dose without medical advice.
