Management of moderate to severe acute pain where an opioid analgesic is appropriate (as prescribed by a doctor).

Tapentadol is a centrally acting opioid analgesic. It relieves pain by activating mu-opioid receptors and also increases norepinephrine levels by inhibiting its reuptake, which enhances descending pain inhibition.

Take by mouth exactly as prescribed. Swallow tablet whole with water; do not crush/chew. May be taken with or without food; take at the same time each day if on a schedule. Avoid driving/operating machinery until you know how it affects you.

Prescription opioid: risk of dependence, abuse and addiction. Can cause severe drowsiness, respiratory depression and low blood pressure; higher risk in elderly, debilitated patients, and those with lung disease (asthma/COPD/sleep apnea). Avoid use with other CNS depressants unless advised. Use caution in head injury, seizures, liver/kidney disease, and history of substance misuse. Do not stop abruptly if used regularly; taper under medical supervision.

Alcohol, benzodiazepines (diazepam/alprazolam), other opioids, sedating antihistamines, antipsychotics, antidepressants (SSRIs/SNRIs/TCAs), MAO inhibitors (avoid within 14 days), tramadol, linezolid/methylene blue (serotonergic drugs), gabapentin/pregabalin

Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place. Protect from moisture and light. Keep out of reach of children.
