Important Warnings

Prescription-only sleep medicine. May cause next-day drowsiness, impaired driving/operating machinery—avoid such activities after taking. Risk of dependence, tolerance, misuse and withdrawal; use for shortest duration. Rare complex sleep behaviours (sleep-walking, sleep-driving, eating while asleep)—stop and seek medical help if occurs. Use with caution in elderly, liver impairment, respiratory disease (sleep apnoea/COPD), depression or history of substance abuse. Do not use with other sedatives unless advised. Not recommended in severe hepatic impairment.

Alcohol and other CNS depressants (benzodiazepines

antipsychotics) increase sedation/respiratory depression. CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g.
ketoconazole
clarithromycin
ritonavir) may increase zolpidem levels; CYP3A4 inducers (e.g.
rifampicin
carbamazepine
phenytoin
St John’s wort) may reduce effect. Caution with antidepressants/antipsychotics due to additive sedation.
