Treatment of anxiety disorders, short-term relief of severe anxiety symptoms, panic disorder (with or without agoraphobia)

Alprazolam is a benzodiazepine that enhances the effect of GABA, an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain. This reduces excessive nerve activity, producing anxiolytic, sedative and muscle-relaxant effects.

Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually 1-3 times daily. May be taken with or without food; take at the same time each day. Swallow whole with water; do not stop suddenly—dose should be tapered under medical supervision.

Drowsiness, dizziness, fatigue, impaired coordination, memory problems, confusion, slurred speech, headache, nausea, constipation, dry mouth

May cause sedation, impaired concentration and slowed reactions—avoid driving or operating machinery. Risk of dependence, tolerance and withdrawal; do not use longer than prescribed and do not stop abruptly. Use caution in elderly, depression/suicidal thoughts, history of substance misuse, and in liver/renal impairment. Can cause respiratory depression, especially with opioids or other CNS depressants. Not recommended in severe respiratory insufficiency, sleep apnoea, acute narrow-angle glaucoma; use only on prescription.

Alcohol and other CNS depressants (opioids, antihistamines, antipsychotics, sedatives) increase sedation/respiratory depression; CYP3A4 inhibitors (ketoconazole, itraconazole, clarithromycin/erythromycin, ritonavir, grapefruit juice) increase alprazolam levels; CYP3A4 inducers (carbamazepine, phenytoin, rifampicin, St John’s wort) reduce effect; additive effects with antidepressants and anticonvulsants

Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
