Type 2 diabetes mellitus (to control high blood sugar) when diet and exercise alone are not sufficient

Glimepiride (a sulfonylurea) increases insulin release from the pancreas. Metformin reduces glucose production in the liver and improves insulin sensitivity, helping the body use insulin better. Together they lower fasting and post-meal blood glucose.

Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Usually taken once daily with/after food (preferably with breakfast) to reduce stomach upset and risk of low sugar. Swallow the tablet whole; do not crush or chew (SR). Monitor blood glucose regularly.

Hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar), nausea, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, vomiting, headache, dizziness, metallic taste, weight gain

Risk of hypoglycaemia (especially with missed meals, strenuous exercise, or alcohol); carry sugar/glucose. Metformin can rarely cause lactic acidosis—risk increases in kidney or liver disease, severe infection, dehydration, heavy alcohol use, or low oxygen states; avoid in severe renal impairment and temporarily stop during severe illness. Inform doctor before surgery or iodinated contrast scans (may need to stop metformin). Monitor kidney function and vitamin B12 with long-term use. Use caution in elderly and those with irregular eating habits.
