Overview
Drug | Tablet
Uses & Benefits
Treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure), management of angina pectoris (chronic stable angina) and vasospastic (Prinzmetal) angina
How It Works
Amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker that relaxes blood vessels by inhibiting calcium entry into vascular smooth muscle. This lowers blood pressure and reduces the workload on the heart, improving blood flow and relieving angina.
Directions for Use
Take as advised by your doctor, usually once daily at the same time each day. Can be taken with or without food; swallow the tablet with water. Do not stop suddenly without medical advice.
Use with caution in liver disease; dose adjustment may be needed. May cause dizziness—avoid driving or operating machinery if affected. Inform your doctor if you have severe aortic stenosis, heart failure, or low blood pressure. Do not discontinue abruptly; monitor blood pressure regularly.
Drug Interactions
Other antihypertensives (additive BP lowering), nitrates, alpha-blockers, PDE5 inhibitors (e.g., sildenafil) (risk of hypotension), strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., clarithromycin, ketoconazole, ritonavir) (increase amlodipine levels), CYP3A4 inducers (e.g., rifampicin, carbamazepine, phenytoin) (reduce effect), simvastatin (limit simvastatin dose; increased statin exposure), tacrolimus/cyclosporine (may increase levels—monitor), grapefruit juice (may increase levels in some patients)
