Used for management of high cholesterol (hyperlipidaemia) and prevention of cardiovascular events (heart attack, stroke) in at-risk patients; also helps treat/ prevent vitamin D deficiency alongside statin therapy.
Atorvastatin is an HMG‑CoA reductase inhibitor (statin) that reduces cholesterol synthesis in the liver, lowering LDL and triglycerides and modestly increasing HDL. Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is converted to active vitamin D, improving calcium absorption and bone/muscle health and correcting vitamin D deficiency.
Take by mouth as advised by the doctor, usually once daily at the same time each day, with or without food. Swallow tablet whole with water; continue diet/exercise advice. Avoid excessive grapefruit juice.
Headache, nausea, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, indigestion, muscle pain (myalgia), weakness, joint pain, increased liver enzymes
Do not use in active liver disease or during pregnancy/breastfeeding unless specifically advised. Statins can rarely cause severe muscle injury (myopathy/rhabdomyolysis)—seek medical help for unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, weakness, fever or dark urine. Monitor liver function and lipid profile as advised; use caution in heavy alcohol use, hypothyroidism, kidney problems, elderly, or history of muscle disorders. Vitamin D3 excess may cause hypercalcaemia—caution in kidney stones, severe renal impairment or sarcoidosis.
Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (clarithromycin/erythromycin, ketoconazole/itraconazole, HIV protease inhibitors, cobicistat) increase atorvastatin levels; fibrates (especially gemfibrozil), niacin and colchicine increase myopathy risk; cyclosporine increases exposure; warfarin may need INR monitoring; grapefruit juice can increase atorvastatin levels; calcium/antacid supplements may be separated if advised; thiazide diuretics may increase hypercalcaemia risk with vitamin D.
Store at room temperature (below 25°C), protected from light and moisture. Keep in original strip and out of reach of children.
