Treatment and prevention of iron deficiency anemia, Nutritional anemia due to iron/folate/Vitamin B12 deficiency, Anemia in pregnancy and lactation
Ferrous fumarate replenishes iron stores needed for hemoglobin formation and oxygen transport. Folic acid and vitamin B12 support DNA synthesis and red blood cell maturation, helping correct megaloblastic and mixed nutritional anemias.
Take as directed by a doctor, usually 1 capsule daily or as prescribed. Preferably take after food to reduce stomach upset; swallow whole with water. Avoid taking with tea/coffee, calcium/antacids close to the dose as they can reduce iron absorption.
Nausea, stomach upset, constipation, diarrhea, abdominal pain, metallic taste, vomiting, dark/black stools
Do not use in iron overload states (hemochromatosis/hemosiderosis) or in anemia not due to iron deficiency unless advised by a doctor. Use with caution in peptic ulcer disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and liver disease. Accidental overdose of iron is dangerous in children—keep out of reach. Iron may cause black stools; if you notice blood in stools or severe abdominal pain, seek medical advice.
Antacids, calcium supplements, dairy products, tea/coffee (reduced absorption), tetracyclines, quinolones (e.g., ciprofloxacin/levofloxacin), levothyroxine, bisphosphonates, penicillamine, methyldopa, levodopa, chloramphenicol (may affect hematologic response)
