Prevention of tetanus in routine immunization and booster dosing; tetanus prophylaxis after wounds/injuries as per immunization status
Tetanus toxoid is an inactivated toxin that stimulates the immune system to produce protective antibodies. These antibodies neutralize tetanus toxin if exposed later, preventing disease.
Administered IM by a healthcare professional (usually deltoid in adults/older children, anterolateral thigh in infants). Follow national immunization schedule or doctor advice; may be given as wound prophylaxis with/without tetanus immunoglobulin depending on case.
Injection site pain, redness, swelling, mild fever, headache, fatigue, body ache
Do not use in patients with severe allergic reaction to a previous dose or vaccine component. Defer in acute severe illness/fever. Syncope can occur after injection; observe briefly. Keep emergency treatment available for anaphylaxis.
Immunosuppressive therapy may reduce vaccine response; can be given with other vaccines at different sites as per immunization guidelines
Store at 2-8°C (refrigerated). Do not freeze. Protect from light; discard if frozen or if particulate/abnormal appearance.
Tetanus Toxoid (TT) Vaccine (generic), Tetavax Injection, Tetanus Vaccine Adsorbed (various brands), Td vaccine (tetanus+diphtheria; alternative depending on age/schedule)
