Uses & Benefits
Treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure), chronic heart failure (as add-on therapy), left ventricular dysfunction after myocardial infarction (to improve survival and reduce complications)
How It Works
Carvedilol is a non-selective beta-blocker with additional alpha-1 blocking activity. It reduces heart rate and myocardial oxygen demand and causes vasodilation, which lowers blood pressure and decreases workload on the heart.
Directions for Use
Take by mouth as prescribed by your doctor. Preferably take with food to reduce the risk of dizziness/low blood pressure. Swallow tablet whole with water; take at the same time each day and do not stop suddenly without medical advice.
Side Effects
Dizziness, fatigue, low blood pressure, slow heart rate, headache, nausea, diarrhea, weight gain, peripheral edema (swelling), shortness of breath
Warnings & Precautions
Do not stop abruptly (may worsen angina/arrhythmias). Use with caution in asthma/COPD (may cause bronchospasm), diabetes (can mask low blood sugar symptoms), severe liver disease, thyroid disorders, and peripheral vascular disease. Contraindicated in severe bradycardia, heart block (2nd/3rd degree) without pacemaker, cardiogenic shock, decompensated heart failure requiring IV inotropes, and severe hypotension. Monitor blood pressure, pulse, and heart failure symptoms; rise slowly from sitting/lying to reduce dizziness.
