Neuropathic pain (nerve pain) such as diabetic neuropathy and post-herpetic neuralgia; adjunct therapy for partial seizures (as prescribed)
Gabapentin modulates neuronal excitability by binding to the alpha-2-delta subunit of voltage-gated calcium channels in the CNS. This reduces release of excitatory neurotransmitters and helps decrease nerve pain and seizure activity.
Take by mouth as prescribed, with or without food. Usually started at a low dose and gradually increased; take at the same times daily. Do not stop suddenly without medical advice; if using antacids, keep a 2-hour gap.
Dizziness, sleepiness, fatigue, unsteadiness, peripheral edema, weight gain, dry mouth, nausea
May cause drowsiness and dizziness; avoid driving/alcohol until you know its effects. Dose adjustment may be needed in kidney disease. Do not discontinue abruptly due to risk of withdrawal symptoms or seizures. Seek help if mood changes or suicidal thoughts occur.
Opioids (increased sedation and respiratory depression risk), antacids containing aluminium/magnesium (reduced absorption), other CNS depressants (additive drowsiness), alcohol (increased impairment)
Store below 25°C in a dry place, protect from moisture and light. Keep out of reach of children.
