May cause hypoglycaemia—risk increases with missed meals, excess exercise, alcohol, or with other antidiabetics; carry glucose. Metformin rarely may cause lactic acidosis—risk higher with kidney disease, dehydration, severe infection, heart/respiratory failure, heavy alcohol use; stop and seek care for rapid breathing, severe weakness, muscle pain, unusual sleepiness.
