Drug | Injection
Treatment of diabetes mellitus (type 1 and type 2) requiring insulin to control blood glucose levels
This is a premixed insulin containing short-acting regular insulin for mealtime glucose control and intermediate-acting NPH insulin for longer basal control. It lowers blood glucose by increasing glucose uptake in muscle and fat and reducing glucose production by the liver.
For subcutaneous injection only, as prescribed by the doctor. Usually injected 30 minutes before meals; dosing and timing are individualized based on blood glucose. Rotate injection sites (abdomen, thigh, upper arm); do not massage the site. Do not use if the suspension is not uniformly milky after gentle rolling.
Hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar),injection site reactions (pain, redness, swelling),weight gain, lipodystrophy (lumps or dents at injection site),oedema, allergic reactions (rash, itching)
Risk of hypoglycaemia—carry glucose/sugar and monitor blood glucose regularly. Do not use during episodes of hypoglycaemia. Dose adjustments may be needed with changes in diet, activity, illness, stress, kidney or liver disease. Use caution while driving/operating machinery if prone to low sugar. Injection must be subcutaneous; avoid intravenous use. Rotate sites to reduce lipodystrophy. Seek urgent help for severe allergy or severe hypoglycaemia.
Other antidiabetics,ACE inhibitors (e.g., enalapril),beta-blockers (may mask hypoglycaemia),corticosteroids (e.g., prednisolone),thiazide diuretics,thyroid hormones,sympathomimetics (e.g., salbutamol),MAO inhibitors,alcohol
