Drug | Suspension
Treatment of susceptible bacterial infections such as ear infections (otitis media), sinusitis, throat/tonsil infections, lower respiratory tract infections (bronchitis/pneumonia), urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and dental infections.
Amoxicillin is a penicillin antibiotic that kills bacteria by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. Clavulanic acid is a beta-lactamase inhibitor that protects amoxicillin from breakdown by beta-lactamase–producing bacteria, thereby extending its spectrum.
Oral suspension: Shake well before use. Measure dose with a measuring cup/oral syringe. Usually given with food at the start of a meal to reduce stomach upset. Follow the doctor’s prescribed dose and duration; complete the full course. Reconstitute with boiled and cooled water up to the mark as per label instructions.
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, indigestion, rash, urticaria, oral/vaginal thrush, headache
Prescription-only (Schedule H). Do not use in patients with allergy to penicillins/cephalosporins or history of severe hypersensitivity. Use with caution in liver disease; may cause hepatitis/cholestatic jaundice—stop and seek care if yellowing of skin/eyes, dark urine, severe fatigue. Adjust dose in renal impairment. Prolonged use may cause superinfection. Seek immediate help for severe diarrhoea (possible C. difficile), severe skin rash, breathing difficulty, or swelling of face/lips.
Warfarin/other anticoagulants (may increase INR), probenecid (increases amoxicillin levels), allopurinol (increased rash risk), methotrexate (reduced clearance/toxicity risk), mycophenolate mofetil (reduced active metabolite exposure), oral typhoid vaccine (reduced efficacy)
Store dry powder at room temperature away from moisture and light. After reconstitution, store in a refrigerator (2–8°C) and do not freeze; use within the period mentioned on the label (commonly 7 days) and discard any leftover.
