Cefpodoxime proxetil 50 mg/5 mL (oral suspension)
Bacterial infections such as ear infection (otitis media), throat/tonsil infections, sinusitis, chest infections (bronchitis, pneumonia), urinary tract infections, and skin/soft tissue infections caused by susceptible bacteria
Cefpodoxime is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It kills bacteria by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to cell lysis and death. It is effective only against bacterial (not viral) infections.
Oral suspension: Shake well before each dose. Measure dose with a calibrated spoon/cup as prescribed (often weight-based in children). Can be taken with food to improve absorption and reduce stomach upset. Complete the full prescribed course even if symptoms improve.
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, headache, rash, dizziness, indigestion
Use only for confirmed/suspected bacterial infections. Do not use if allergic to cefpodoxime/cephalosporins; use caution in penicillin allergy due to possible cross-reactivity. Dose adjustment may be needed in kidney disease. Prolonged use may cause superinfection (e.g., fungal) and antibiotic-associated diarrhoea; seek care for severe/persistent diarrhoea or blood in stools (possible C. difficile). Inform doctor if history of colitis. Stop and seek urgent help if signs of severe allergy (swelling, breathing difficulty, severe rash).
Antacids and H2 blockers (e.g., ranitidine/famotidine) may reduce absorption; probenecid may increase antibiotic levels; anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin) may increase bleeding risk (monitor INR); live oral typhoid vaccine may be less effective; other nephrotoxic drugs may increase kidney risk
Store tightly closed as directed on label. After reconstitution, usually store in a refrigerator (2–8°C) and do not freeze; discard after the period mentioned on pack/label (commonly 7–14 days). Protect from light and moisture.
