Drug ClassInsulin analogue (premixed biphasic insulin aspart)
ScheduleH
PrescriptionRequired (Rx)
Overview
Drug | Injection
Uses & Benefits
Treatment of diabetes mellitus (Type 1 and Type 2) to control blood glucose, including when a premixed insulin regimen is appropriate.
How It Works
Novomix 30 is a premixed insulin containing rapid-acting insulin aspart and intermediate-acting protamine insulin aspart. The rapid component controls post-meal glucose spikes, while the protaminated component provides longer basal coverage. It lowers blood glucose by increasing peripheral glucose uptake and reducing hepatic glucose output.
Directions for Use
For subcutaneous injection using a compatible insulin pen (Penfill cartridge). Typically injected 0–15 minutes before a meal; may be given immediately after a meal if needed as advised by doctor. Rotate injection sites (abdomen, thigh, upper arm) and do not inject into veins or muscle. Dose and frequency are individualized based on blood glucose monitoring and medical advice.
Side Effects
Hypoglycaemia, injection site reactions (redness/swelling/itching), weight gain, lipodystrophy at injection site, oedema, allergic reactions, rash
Warnings & Precautions
Risk of hypoglycaemia—carry glucose/sugar and monitor blood glucose regularly. Do not use during episodes of hypoglycaemia. Ensure correct insulin and strength (100 IU/mL) before use to avoid dosing errors. Use caution in renal/hepatic impairment (may need dose adjustment). Do not share pens/cartridges/needles; infection risk. May impair ability to drive/operate machinery if hypoglycaemia occurs. Seek urgent care for severe allergy or persistent high sugars/ketosis.
Store unopened cartridges refrigerated at 2–8°C; do not freeze. Protect from light. In-use cartridge/pen: keep below 30°C (per label) away from heat/light; do not refrigerate if advised for in-use product; discard after the in-use period as per pack insert. Keep out of reach of children.
