Uses & Benefits
Prevention and treatment of nausea and vomiting due to chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and post-operative states; doctor may also prescribe for severe vomiting due to other causes.
How It Works
Ondansetron is a selective 5-HT3 (serotonin) receptor antagonist. It blocks serotonin receptors in the gut and the vomiting center in the brain, reducing the nausea and vomiting reflex.
Directions for Use
Oral syrup. Shake well before use and measure with a calibrated spoon/cup. Take exactly as prescribed; can be taken with or without food. Dose depends on age/weight and the cause of vomiting; do not exceed the prescribed frequency.
Prescription (Schedule H) medicine. Use with caution in patients with heart rhythm disorders, congenital long QT syndrome, bradyarrhythmias, electrolyte disturbances (low potassium/magnesium), or those taking other QT-prolonging drugs. Seek medical help for palpitations, fainting, severe dizziness, or signs of allergic reaction. Use caution in liver impairment (may need dose adjustment). Not for self-treatment of persistent vomiting—evaluate dehydration and underlying cause, especially in children.
Drug Interactions
QT-prolonging medicines (e.g., amiodarone, sotalol, certain antipsychotics and antibiotics like macrolides/fluoroquinolones), serotonergic drugs (SSRIs/SNRIs, tramadol, linezolid) due to serotonin syndrome risk, apomorphine (contraindicated—severe hypotension/loss of consciousness), strong CYP3A4 inducers (e.g., rifampicin, phenytoin, carbamazepine) may reduce effect
