Allergic conditions, asthma/COPD exacerbations, inflammatory and autoimmune disorders (e.g., rheumatoid arthritis, SLE), skin disorders (eczema/dermatitis), eye inflammation, nephrotic syndrome; used to reduce swelling, pain and immune overactivity
Methylprednisolone is a corticosteroid that suppresses the immune response and reduces inflammation. It decreases production of inflammatory mediators and limits swelling, redness and tissue damage.
Oral tablet; take exactly as prescribed. Preferably take with food/milk to reduce stomach upset, usually in the morning. Do not stop suddenly; dose is tapered after prolonged use. If a dose is missed, take it when remembered unless close to next dose.
Indigestion/heartburn, nausea, increased appetite, weight gain, mood changes/irritability, insomnia, headache, increased blood sugar, fluid retention/swelling, increased blood pressure, acne
Prescription steroid: long-term/high-dose use can cause adrenal suppression, osteoporosis, cataract/glaucoma, muscle weakness and increased infection risk. Avoid close contact with people having infections (e.g., chickenpox/measles); seek care if exposed. Use caution in diabetes, hypertension, peptic ulcer disease, glaucoma, osteoporosis, liver disease and psychiatric illness. May mask signs of infection. Do not stop abruptly after long use. Vaccines: avoid live vaccines during immunosuppressive doses.
NSAIDs/aspirin (GI bleed risk), anticoagulants like warfarin (INR changes), antidiabetics/insulin (reduced effect), antihypertensives/diuretics (electrolyte changes), rifampicin/phenytoin/carbamazepine (reduced steroid effect), ketoconazole/clarithromycin (increased steroid levels), cyclosporine/tacrolimus (toxicity), live vaccines (infection risk)
