Treatment of menstrual disorders such as abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB)/dysfunctional uterine bleeding, heavy menstrual bleeding, irregular periods; secondary amenorrhoea (absence of periods); postponement of menstruation; endometriosis (as prescribed).
How It Works
Norethisterone is a synthetic progestin (progesterone-like hormone). It stabilizes the endometrium (uterine lining) and reduces abnormal shedding/bleeding. When stopped after a course, withdrawal bleeding usually occurs.
Directions for Use
Oral tablet. Take exactly as prescribed by the doctor; swallow whole (do not crush/chew) as it is controlled release. Can be taken with or without food, preferably at the same time each day. Dose and duration depend on the condition (e.g., bleeding control, period delay, endometriosis).

Warnings & Precautions
Schedule H: use only on prescription. Rule out pregnancy before starting; not for use in known/suspected pregnancy. Use with caution in liver disease, history of jaundice, depression, diabetes, hypertension, migraine, asthma, epilepsy. Seek urgent care for symptoms of blood clots (leg swelling/pain, chest pain, sudden breathlessness), severe headache/vision changes, or jaundice. May cause irregular bleeding, especially initially. Not a contraceptive; use additional contraception if needed as advised. Avoid in active thromboembolic disorders, severe liver disease, hormone-dependent malignancy, undiagnosed vaginal bleeding (as per clinician assessment).

Drug Interactions
Enzyme inducers may reduce effect: rifampicin/rifabutin, phenytoin, carbamazepine, phenobarbital/primidone, topiramate, some antiretrovirals, St John’s wort. May affect anticoagulant control (warfarin) and antidiabetic dose requirements. Consult doctor/pharmacist for interaction check.
