Monograph
Tablet
Treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure); reduction of cardiovascular risk (heart attack/stroke) in high-risk patients when appropriate.
Telmisartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB). It blocks angiotensin II (AT1) receptors, leading to relaxation of blood vessels and reduced aldosterone effects, which lowers blood pressure and reduces strain on the heart.
Tablet for oral use. Take as prescribed, usually once daily at the same time each day, with or without food. Swallow whole with water; do not stop abruptly without medical advice.
Dizziness, headache, fatigue, low blood pressure, increased potassium (hyperkalemia), nausea, back pain
Not recommended in pregnancy (can harm unborn baby), especially 2nd/3rd trimester; avoid while breastfeeding unless advised. Use caution in kidney disease, renal artery stenosis, dehydration/low salt, liver impairment, and in patients with low blood pressure. Monitor kidney function and serum potassium. Risk of hyperkalemia increases with potassium supplements/salt substitutes. Seek help for fainting, severe dizziness, swelling of face/lips (angioedema), or reduced urination.
Potassium supplements/salt substitutes, potassium-sparing diuretics (spironolactone/eplerenone/amiloride), other antihypertensives (additive BP lowering), NSAIDs (may reduce effect and worsen kidney function), lithium (increased lithium levels/toxicity), ACE inhibitors or aliskiren (increased risk of kidney impairment/hyperkalemia; avoid in diabetes), diuretics (may cause first-dose hypotension)
Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from moisture and light. Keep in original blister pack and out of reach of children.
