Type 2 diabetes mellitus—used to improve glycaemic control along with diet and exercise; may be used alone or in combination with other antidiabetic medicines (e.g., metformin, sulfonylurea, insulin) as prescribed.

Vildagliptin is a DPP-4 inhibitor. It increases incretin hormones (GLP-1 and GIP), which enhances glucose-dependent insulin release and reduces glucagon secretion, thereby lowering blood glucose with a low risk of hypoglycaemia when used alone.

Oral tablet. Take exactly as prescribed, usually once or twice daily with or without food. Swallow with water at the same time each day; do not stop without medical advice. If a dose is missed, take it when remembered unless it is close to the next dose.

Headache, dizziness, tremor, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, constipation, fatigue, nasopharyngitis, peripheral oedema, hypoglycaemia (more likely with sulfonylureas/insulin), skin rash

Not for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. Liver function monitoring may be advised; stop and seek medical help if symptoms of hepatitis occur (jaundice, dark urine, persistent nausea). Rare risk of pancreatitis—seek urgent care for severe persistent abdominal pain. Use caution in renal impairment (dose adjustment may be required) and in patients with heart failure; consult doctor before use. Inform doctor about history of angioedema; serious allergic reactions are rare. Not a substitute for diet/exercise and regular glucose monitoring.

Insulin and sulfonylureas (increased risk of hypoglycaemia), ACE inhibitors (may increase risk of angioedema), other antidiabetic medicines (additive glucose-lowering), alcohol (may worsen glycaemic control and pancreatitis risk). Clinically significant CYP interactions are unlikely.

Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place. Protect from moisture and direct light. Keep out of reach of children.
