Treatment of excessive daytime sleepiness associated with narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) (as adjunct to CPAP/primary therapy), and shift work sleep disorder (SWSD).

Armodafinil is a wakefulness-promoting agent that increases alertness by modulating neurotransmitters in the brain (including dopamine pathways via dopamine transporter inhibition) and other arousal systems. It helps reduce excessive sleepiness without being a traditional amphetamine stimulant.

Take exactly as prescribed. For narcolepsy/OSA: usually taken once daily in the morning. For SWSD: usually taken about 1 hour before the start of the work shift. Can be taken with or without food; swallow tablet whole with water. Avoid taking late in the day unless directed, as it may cause insomnia.

Headache, nausea, dizziness, insomnia, anxiety, dry mouth, decreased appetite, diarrhea, palpitations

Prescription-only wakefulness agent. May cause serious rash or hypersensitivity reactions (stop and seek medical help if rash, fever, mouth sores, swelling, breathing trouble). Can cause psychiatric symptoms (anxiety, agitation, hallucinations, suicidal thoughts) especially in those with mental illness—use with caution. May increase blood pressure/heart rate—caution in hypertension, heart disease, arrhythmias. May impair ability to drive/operate machinery until effects are known. Not a substitute for adequate sleep; OSA patients should continue CPAP/primary therapy. Potential for misuse/dependence—use only under medical supervision. Dose adjustment may be needed in severe liver impairment; caution in elderly.

Hormonal contraceptives (reduced effectiveness—use alternative contraception during and for ~1 month after stopping), CYP3A4 substrates (may reduce levels e.g., midazolam, some antiretrovirals), CYP2C19 substrates (may increase levels e.g., diazepam, phenytoin, omeprazole), warfarin (monitor INR), anticonvulsants (phenytoin, carbamazepine), sedatives/alcohol (additive CNS effects), MAO inhibitors (use with caution)

Store below 25°C in a dry place. Protect from moisture and direct light. Keep out of reach of children.
