Monograph
Azithromycin 200 mg/5 mL (oral suspension)
Bacterial infections of ear, nose, throat, chest/lungs (bronchitis, pneumonia), skin/soft tissue infections, certain genital infections (e.g., chlamydia) as prescribed.
Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit. This stops growth of susceptible bacteria and helps clear the infection.
Oral suspension: shake well before use and measure dose with a measuring cup/syringe. Give exactly as prescribed; commonly once daily. Can be taken with or without food (take with food if stomach upset). Complete the full course. Reconstitute with boiled-cooled water as directed on the label.
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, indigestion, headache, dizziness, rash
Use only for bacterial infections (not viral). Use with caution in liver disease, history of cholestatic jaundice with azithromycin, myasthenia gravis, or heart rhythm problems (QT prolongation/arrhythmias). Seek care for severe/persistent diarrhea (possible C. difficile), allergic reactions (swelling, breathing trouble), severe skin rash, or jaundice. Dose adjustment may be needed in severe renal impairment. Pediatric dosing must be weight-based.
Antacids containing aluminum/magnesium (separate dosing), warfarin/other anticoagulants (increased bleeding risk—monitor INR), antiarrhythmics/QT-prolonging drugs (e.g., amiodarone, sotalol, quinolones, some antipsychotics), digoxin (may increase levels), cyclosporine (may increase levels), ergot derivatives (avoid)
Store below 25°C, protected from light and moisture. After reconstitution, store as per label (often at room temperature); do not freeze. Keep tightly closed and out of reach of children.
