Uses & Benefits
Treatment of susceptible bacterial infections such as acute bacterial sinusitis, pharyngitis/tonsillitis, acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, community-acquired pneumonia (mild), uncomplicated urinary tract infections, and skin/soft tissue infections.
How It Works
Cefpodoxime is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins, leading to cell lysis and death of susceptible bacteria.
Directions for Use
Take as prescribed by a doctor. Usually taken orally with food to improve absorption; swallow whole with water. Complete the full course even if you feel better; do not skip doses.
Side Effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, indigestion, headache, dizziness, skin rash, itching, vaginal candidiasis, transient rise in liver enzymes
Warnings & Precautions
Use only for bacterial infections. Inform your doctor if you have allergy to cephalosporins/penicillins, history of severe allergy, kidney disease, or colitis. Prolonged use may cause superinfection (e.g., fungal infection) and antibiotic-associated diarrhoea; seek care for severe/persistent diarrhoea or blood in stools (possible C. difficile). Dose adjustment may be needed in renal impairment. Use with caution in children/elderly as advised.
Drug Interactions
Antacids/H2 blockers (may reduce absorption), probenecid (may increase cefpodoxime levels), warfarin/other anticoagulants (may increase bleeding risk; monitor INR), live oral typhoid vaccine (reduced response), other nephrotoxic drugs (monitor kidney function)
