Monograph
Cefpodoxime proxetil 200 mg + Clavulanic acid 125 mg (per tablet)
Bacterial infections such as acute bacterial sinusitis, tonsillitis/pharyngitis, otitis media, acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, community-acquired pneumonia, skin and soft tissue infections, and uncomplicated urinary tract infections (as prescribed).
Cefpodoxime is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to bacterial death. Clavulanic acid is a beta-lactamase inhibitor that protects cefpodoxime from degradation by beta-lactamase–producing bacteria, improving coverage against resistant strains.
Oral tablet. Take exactly as prescribed, preferably with food to improve absorption and reduce stomach upset. Swallow whole with water; complete the full course even if you feel better.
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, indigestion, headache, dizziness, skin rash, itching, vaginal yeast infection, transient rise in liver enzymes
Use only for suspected/confirmed bacterial infections. Inform your doctor if you have a history of allergy to cephalosporins/penicillins, severe kidney disease (dose adjustment may be needed), colitis or severe diarrhoea, or liver disease. Stop and seek medical help if you develop severe rash, breathing difficulty, swelling, or severe/persistent diarrhoea (risk of C. difficile-associated diarrhoea). May reduce effectiveness of oral typhoid vaccine. Use with caution in children/elderly as advised.
Warfarin and other anticoagulants (may increase bleeding risk/INR), probenecid (may increase antibiotic levels), antacids/H2 blockers (may reduce cefpodoxime absorption), live oral typhoid vaccine (reduced response), other nephrotoxic drugs (monitor kidney function)
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place. Protect from moisture and direct light. Keep out of reach of children.
