Monograph
Zolpidem tartrate 10 mg tablets
Short-term treatment of insomnia, especially difficulty in falling asleep and/or frequent night awakenings
Zolpidem is a non-benzodiazepine hypnotic that enhances the effect of GABA at the GABA-A receptor (preferentially via the BZ1/omega-1 site). This increases inhibitory neurotransmission in the brain, helping induce sleep and reduce nighttime awakenings.
Take by mouth exactly as prescribed, usually once daily at bedtime, immediately before going to sleep. Take on an empty stomach (or avoid taking with/after a heavy meal) for faster onset. Ensure you can sleep for at least 7–8 hours after taking; do not take a second dose in the same night.
Drowsiness, dizziness, headache, next-day sleepiness, nausea, diarrhea, dry mouth, fatigue, abnormal dreams
Prescription-only sedative: may cause daytime drowsiness and impaired driving—avoid operating machinery. Risk of dependence, misuse and withdrawal; use for the shortest duration. Can cause complex sleep behaviors (sleep-walking/driving/eating); stop and seek medical advice if these occur. Avoid use in severe liver impairment, severe respiratory insufficiency or sleep apnea unless advised; dose reduction may be needed in elderly and hepatic impairment. Use caution in depression, suicidal ideation, history of substance use disorder; do not combine with other CNS depressants.
Alcohol, opioids, benzodiazepines, antihistamines and other CNS depressants (additive sedation/respiratory depression); CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., ketoconazole, clarithromycin, ritonavir) increase levels; CYP3A4 inducers (e.g., rifampicin, carbamazepine, phenytoin) reduce effect; fluvoxamine may increase sedation; concomitant use with other hypnotics not recommended
