How to choose
Look at the active ingredient. Salicylic acid (1-2%) is the workhorse — oil-soluble, penetrates pores, dissolves the dead skin and sebum that plug them. Benzoyl peroxide (2.5-5%) kills acne-causing bacteria — stronger but more drying. Both are evidence-backed first-line treatments. Tea tree oil is gentler and good for sensitive acne-prone skin. Sulphur and zinc are old-school options that still work for some. Skip face washes loaded with fragrance, alcohol, harsh scrubs (microbeads or large physical exfoliants), or coconut oil (comedogenic). Texture: gel or foam for oily/teen acne; cream-based for adult or sensitive acne. pH: aim for pH 5-6 (close to skin's natural pH) — alkaline soap-based washes (pH 9+) disrupt the skin barrier. Skin type adjustment: oily/teen acne tolerates daily 2% salicylic acid; sensitive or adult acne usually does better with 1% or alternating days.
Who really needs this
Good for: hormonal acne (chin/jaw breakouts in adult women), comedonal acne (blackheads and whiteheads), mild-to-moderate inflammatory acne. Not enough for: severe cystic acne (needs dermatologist + prescription retinoids/antibiotics/isotretinoin), fungal acne (looks like acne but needs antifungal treatment), or acne-mimicking conditions like rosacea.
