How 1-Al-5 mg works

Amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker (dihydropyridine) that relaxes and widens blood vessels by reducing calcium entry into vascular smooth muscle. This lowers blood pressure and decreases the heart’s workload, improving blood flow to the heart.

How to take 1-Al-5 mg

Take orally as directed by the physician, usually once daily at the same time each day, with or without food. Swallow the tablet with water; do not stop suddenly without medical advice.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

Take it as soon as you remember. If your next dose is almost due, skip the one you missed — never take two doses together to catch up.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine can cause severe drowsiness, a fast heartbeat, confusion and, in children, agitation and fits. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Side effects of 1-Al-5 mg

Most side effects of 1-Al-5 mg are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

• Ankle/feet swelling (edema)
• headache
• dizziness
• flushing
• palpitations
• fatigue
• nausea
• abdominal pain

Stop the medicine and seek help immediately for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.

Warnings and precautions

Use with caution in liver disease (dose adjustment may be needed). May cause dizziness—avoid driving/operating machinery if affected. Monitor for excessive fall in blood pressure, worsening chest pain at start or dose increase (rare), and peripheral edema. Inform doctor if you have heart failure, severe aortic stenosis, or are taking other BP-lowering medicines.

Do not take 1-Al-5 mg if

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. The sedating antihistamines are not suitable for very young children, or for people with glaucoma or an enlarged prostate, without medical advice.

Interactions with other medicines

Other antihypertensives (additive BP lowering), simvastatin (limit simvastatin dose; increased levels), strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., clarithromycin, erythromycin, ketoconazole, ritonavir) may increase amlodipine levels, CYP3A4 inducers (e.g., rifampicin, carbamazepine, phenytoin) may reduce effect, grapefruit juice (may increase levels in some patients)

Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place. Protect from moisture and direct light. Keep out of reach of children.
