Acamprosate calcium 333 mg (equivalent to acamprosate 300 mg)
Maintenance of abstinence in alcohol dependence/alcohol use disorder (as part of a comprehensive program including counseling and psychosocial support)
Acamprosate modulates neurotransmission in the brain by reducing glutamatergic hyperexcitability and helping restore the balance between excitatory (glutamate) and inhibitory (GABA) pathways disrupted by chronic alcohol use. This reduces post-withdrawal cravings and discomfort, supporting continued abstinence.
Use as prescribed by a doctor. Typically started after alcohol detoxification/when abstinent. Tablets are swallowed whole with water; can be taken with or without food (taking with meals may improve tolerance). Do not crush/chew unless advised. Dose adjustment may be needed in kidney impairment.
Common side effects of Acamprol Tablet may include:
Not for treating acute alcohol withdrawal—use only to maintain abstinence. Avoid/use with caution in renal impairment; contraindicated in severe kidney disease. Use caution in depression or suicidal thoughts—monitor mood/behavior. If relapse occurs, continue only as advised by clinician along with counseling. Inform doctor about all medicines and medical conditions.
