Divalproex increases brain levels of GABA and stabilizes neuronal firing. This helps prevent seizures, reduces manic symptoms, and lowers migraine frequency in suitable patients.
Take exactly as prescribed, preferably at the same time each day. Swallow ER tablet whole; do not crush or chew. Can be taken with food if stomach upset occurs.

Serious risks: liver toxicity, pancreatitis, and severe birth defects. Avoid in pregnancy unless clearly necessary; use effective contraception. Seek urgent care for severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, jaundice, unusual bruising/bleeding, or worsening seizures. Dose adjustments and monitoring may be needed in liver disease.
