Important Warnings

Prescription-only (Schedule H). Do not use for weight loss. Dose needs individual titration and periodic TSH/T4 monitoring. Use caution in elderly patients and those with coronary artery disease, heart failure, arrhythmias or hypertension—overtreatment may cause angina, atrial fibrillation and osteoporosis. In adrenal insufficiency, treat adrenal condition before starting levothyroxine. If symptoms of hyperthyroidism occur (palpitations, chest pain, anxiety, unexplained weight loss), contact doctor; do not stop abruptly without advice.

phenobarbital (increased metabolism); sertraline (may increase requirement); amiodarone (affects thyroid function); warfarin (increased anticoagulant effect); insulin/antidiabetics (dose adjustment may be needed); digoxin (effect may reduce); estrogen therapy (may increase dose requirement).
