Important Warnings

Prescription-only antibiotic; use only for bacterial infections. Do not use if allergic to ceftriaxone/cephalosporins; caution in severe penicillin allergy. Avoid/contraindicated in hyperbilirubinaemic neonates and in neonates receiving IV calcium-containing solutions (risk of precipitation). Use caution in liver disease, renal impairment (especially combined), history of colitis, gallbladder/biliary sludging. Long-term use may cause superinfection; monitor CBC and liver/renal function if prolonged therapy.

Calcium-containing IV solutions in neonates (contraindicated) and avoid mixing with calcium solutions in the same IV line; warfarin/other anticoagulants (increased bleeding risk—monitor INR); aminoglycosides/loop diuretics (increased nephrotoxicity risk—monitor); oral typhoid vaccine (reduced efficacy); probenecid (may increase cephalosporin levels)
