Amitriptyline (10mg)
Depression, neuropathic (nerve) pain, prevention of migraine/tension-type headache (as prescribed), anxiety with depression, chronic pain conditions
Amitriptyline is a tricyclic antidepressant that increases levels of serotonin and noradrenaline in the brain by inhibiting their reuptake, improving mood. It also modulates pain pathways, which helps reduce neuropathic pain and can prevent certain headaches.
Take by mouth exactly as prescribed. Often started at low dose (e.g., 10 mg) and usually taken at night due to drowsiness; may be taken with or without food. Swallow with water; do not stop suddenly without medical advice.
Drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, constipation, blurred vision, weight gain, nausea, difficulty urinating, increased appetite
May cause marked drowsiness—avoid driving/alcohol until you know its effects. Do not use with MAO inhibitors or within 14 days of stopping them. Use caution in heart disease/arrhythmias, glaucoma, urinary retention/prostate enlargement, seizures, bipolar disorder, liver disease, and in elderly (higher risk of falls/confusion). Risk of suicidal thoughts especially when starting/changing dose; seek help if mood worsens. Do not stop abruptly (withdrawal symptoms).
MAO inhibitors, other serotonergic drugs (SSRIs/SNRIs, tramadol, linezolid, triptans) – serotonin syndrome risk; alcohol and CNS depressants (benzodiazepines, opioids, antihistamines) – increased sedation; anticholinergics – increased constipation/urinary retention; QT-prolonging drugs (certain antiarrhythmics, antipsychotics, macrolides/fluoroquinolones) – arrhythmia risk; CYP2D6 inhibitors (fluoxetine, paroxetine, quinidine) – increased amitriptyline levels; antihypertensives – enhanced hypotension
Store at room temperature (below 25°C), protected from light and moisture. Keep in original blister pack and out of reach of children.
