Treatment of high blood pressure (hypertension), Treatment of fluid retention/edema associated with heart failure, liver disease or kidney disorders
Hydrochlorothiazide is a thiazide diuretic (water pill). It works by increasing the excretion of sodium and water from the kidneys, which reduces fluid overload and lowers blood pressure. It may also reduce peripheral vascular resistance over time.
Take as directed by your doctor, usually once daily (preferably in the morning). It may be taken with or without food; taking it earlier in the day helps avoid nighttime urination. Do not stop abruptly without medical advice; monitor blood pressure and electrolytes as advised.
Increased urination, dizziness, headache, weakness, nausea, low potassium, low sodium, dehydration, increased blood uric acid, increased blood sugar
May cause electrolyte imbalance (low potassium/sodium/magnesium) and dehydration; periodic blood tests may be needed. Use with caution in kidney or liver disease, diabetes, gout/hyperuricemia, and in elderly patients. Can cause dizziness—avoid driving if affected. May increase sensitivity to sunlight; use sunscreen. Seek medical help for severe rash, fainting, muscle cramps, irregular heartbeat, or markedly reduced urination.
Lithium (increased toxicity), NSAIDs (reduced antihypertensive/diuretic effect, kidney risk), other antihypertensives (additive BP lowering), corticosteroids/amphotericin B (increased hypokalemia), digoxin (arrhythmia risk with low potassium), antidiabetic medicines/insulin (may alter glucose control), cholestyramine/colestipol (reduced absorption), alcohol (increased dizziness)
Store at room temperature (below 25°C), in a dry place, protected from moisture and light. Keep out of reach of children.
