Treatment of intestinal worm (helminth) infections such as roundworm, hookworm, pinworm/threadworm, whipworm; also used for certain tapeworm infections as advised by a doctor
Albendazole is a broad-spectrum anthelmintic. It inhibits microtubule formation and glucose uptake in worms, leading to energy depletion and death of the parasites.
Shake well before use. Measure with a calibrated spoon/cup. Usually taken as a single dose or short course as prescribed; take with food (preferably fatty meal) for better absorption. Deworming dose and repeat schedule depend on age/weight and type of worm—follow doctor’s advice.
Nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, fever, increased liver enzymes, rash
Do not use in pregnancy (especially first trimester); women of childbearing potential may be advised pregnancy test and contraception during and for 1 month after therapy. Use with caution in liver disease; liver function tests may be needed for prolonged/high-dose use. Rare blood count abnormalities can occur with longer courses—monitor if prescribed. Seek medical help for severe rash, jaundice, unusual bleeding/bruising, or persistent abdominal symptoms.
Cimetidine, dexamethasone, praziquantel (may increase albendazole levels), phenytoin, carbamazepine, phenobarbital (may reduce effectiveness), ritonavir (may affect levels); inform doctor about all medicines and herbal products
