Hypertension (high blood pressure), angina (chest pain), cardiac arrhythmias, prevention of migraine, essential tremor, anxiety symptoms (performance anxiety), prevention of bleeding from oesophageal varices, adjunct in hyperthyroidism/thyrotoxicosis
Propranolol is a non-selective beta-adrenergic blocker. It reduces heart rate and cardiac output and decreases renin release from kidneys, thereby lowering blood pressure and reducing workload on the heart. It also stabilizes electrical activity of the heart and helps prevent migraine.
Take as prescribed by your doctor. Swallow the tablet with water at the same time each day; may be taken with or without food (take consistently). Do not stop suddenly without medical advice; dose is usually tapered.
Fatigue, dizziness, slow heart rate (bradycardia), low blood pressure, cold hands/feet, nausea, diarrhoea, sleep disturbances, vivid dreams
Do not use in asthma/COPD with bronchospasm, severe bradycardia, heart block, cardiogenic shock or uncontrolled heart failure unless advised by a specialist. May mask symptoms of hypoglycaemia in diabetics; monitor blood sugar. Use caution in peripheral vascular disease, depression, thyroid disorders and in those prone to bronchospasm. Do not stop abruptly as it may worsen angina or precipitate arrhythmias. Inform doctor before surgery/anaesthesia.
Calcium channel blockers (verapamil, diltiazem), antiarrhythmics (amiodarone), digoxin, clonidine (rebound hypertension on withdrawal), other antihypertensives, insulin/oral antidiabetics (masks hypoglycaemia), NSAIDs (may reduce antihypertensive effect), bronchodilators (opposing effects), antidepressants like fluoxetine/paroxetine (may increase levels), cimetidine (increases levels), rifampicin (decreases levels)
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place away from moisture and direct light. Keep out of reach of children.
