Treatment of partial-onset (focal) seizures in epilepsy, as monotherapy or adjunct therapy in adults as prescribed.
How It Works
Brivaracetam binds selectively to synaptic vesicle protein 2A (SV2A) in the brain, modulating neurotransmitter release. This stabilizes neuronal activity and helps reduce seizure frequency.
Directions for Use
Take exactly as prescribed, usually once daily for SR formulations, with or without food. Swallow tablet whole; do not crush or chew. Do not stop suddenly; tapering may be needed to avoid seizure worsening.
May cause somnolence and dizziness; avoid driving until you know the effect. Monitor for mood/behavior changes, depression or suicidal thoughts. Use caution in liver impairment (dose adjustment may be needed). Abrupt discontinuation can increase seizure risk.
Drug Interactions
Alcohol and other CNS depressants increase sedation, rifampicin may reduce brivaracetam levels, carbamazepine and phenytoin may have additive CNS effects and may alter levels, levetiracetam (monitor clinical response), oral contraceptives generally have no significant interaction at usual doses but follow prescriber advice
