Treatment of fungal infections such as tinea (ringworm), pityriasis versicolor, oral/vaginal candidiasis (as prescribed), onychomycosis (nail fungal infection) and certain systemic fungal infections.
Itraconazole is a triazole antifungal that inhibits fungal CYP450 enzyme (14-alpha-demethylase), blocking ergosterol synthesis. This damages the fungal cell membrane and stops growth.
Take exactly as prescribed, preferably with food for better absorption. Swallow capsule whole; do not crush or chew. Complete the full course; for nail infections may be given as pulse therapy per doctor.
Nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, rash, elevated liver enzymes
Prescription-only. Can cause serious liver injury; seek care if yellowing of eyes/skin, dark urine or persistent nausea. Not recommended in pregnancy unless clearly needed. Can worsen heart failure; avoid in patients with congestive heart failure unless advised. Many drug interactions; inform doctor of all medicines.
Statins (simvastatin/lovastatin), certain antiarrhythmics (quinidine/dofetilide), benzodiazepines (midazolam/triazolam), calcium channel blockers, digoxin, warfarin, oral hypoglycemics, carbamazepine/phenytoin/rifampicin (reduce effect), PPIs/H2 blockers/antacids (reduce absorption)
